Evergreen Park

Kennedy, Robert J (Red) age 79; a railroad engineer and switchman, passed away on March 19, 2024 at Little Company of Mary Hospital. Mr. Kennedy, a longtime Evergreen Park resident, was born in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood. After graduating from Morgan Park Academy in Chicago, he briefly worked as an electrician before being hired with the Rock Island railroad in 1964. He worked as a switchman until they closed in 1980. He was then hired by the Chicago Northwestern railroad as a switchman  In 1986  he joined the Belt Railway Company and was promoted to a locomotive engineer until his retirement in 2004. Red was a dog lover with an affinity for dachshunds. In his spare time, he was an avid fisherman and longtime member of the Piscateers fishing club in Dolton where he held the title of billiards champion. Robert was the loving husband of the late Darlene nee Chermel, and is survived by his children, Angela Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Joseph (Stacy) Kennedy. His sister Donna Lee Roll and cousins Suzzie Carrubba and Leslie Roberts. Robert leaves behind 3 grandchildren Nicholas Kennedy, Daniel Kennedy, Lea Kennedy. and numerous extended family and friends.
