Lorraine E. (Galli) Moses was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 2, 1927, the only child of Myrtle (Engel) and Raymond Galli. She attended Sawyer Avenue and Gage Park High Schools where she achieved high grades and many awards for her excellence as a student. As a teenager she was part of a high-spirited group of adventuresome young women called “The Gremlins”, who would ride their bikes from Gage Park to Willow Springs and back in a day. This group of ten were respectful and cordial to each other and experienced wholesome times together.
After high school, Lorraine became an office worker. Anyone who saw the rows of perfectly typed numbers she recorded would not be amazed that she achieved her goal – to work downtown. What a glamorous life for a young woman from the southwest side! The Kedzie bus to Archer to “the Loop”, where, during lunch time she would revel in the glory of Marshall Fields.
It was at the bus stop that she met the love of her life, George Moses. It was raining and she offered to share her umbrella. George, a veteran of World War II, quickly knew he wanted to share his life with this petite woman with the long curly dark brown hair. They were married from 1952 until his death in 2019. They lived a happy and productive life, working hard and enjoying travel, meeting new people and being generous with their time and resources.
The years after George’s death found Lorraine alone for the first time in her life. She kept up their bungalow and learned to cope with the everyday occurrences of life without him. With the help of loving friends, she was able to stay in her home until recently. Lorraine Galli Moses was a remarkable woman who loved well and widely. Lorraine is celebrated by family members and friends, some living, some with whom she is now reunited. All who know her are sure she is very happy to be together again with the man who shared her umbrella that stormy day. “I love you, a bushel and a peck…and two potatoes.”
Lorraine’s favorite charities are the Salvation Army and The Veterans of Foreign Wars. Please thank God for creating such a delightful woman and imagine her aglow in radiant joy.
