It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Jose Luis Alvarez. He was born in Mexico on May 28, 1947, and spent most of his life in Chicago. He passed on August 20, 2026.
Jose’s warmth and easygoing spirit were evident to everyone he met. He lived each day with gratitude, meeting life’s ups and downs with a happy-go-lucky attitude and a ready smile. He brought joy to those around him through his kindness, generosity, and his readiness to set aside his own plans to help someone in need. His presence was a beacon of light to everyone lucky enough to know him, who will forever cherish the moments they shared with him.
Jose was selfless and compassionate, an attentive listener whose counsel was truly invaluable to those who sought it. He never hesitated to stop whatever he was doing to help anyone in need. By profession a furniture restorer, his love of woodworking and finishing showed in every completed project. He saw beauty in every piece of furniture, just as he did in life, and pursued perfection in all he created. His work ethic was nothing short of remarkable. He approached life with an unshakeable, easygoing joy, meeting every circumstance with gratitude and going with the flow. He held a deep passion for animals, especially those who’d been discarded or abused, and even rescued animals from harm.
Above all, Jose was a happy-go-lucky man with a profound love for his family, who took great pride in everything he did. He had a great sense of humor and could make anyone laugh. He loved singing made-up songs in the shower, half in English and half in Spanish, and sharing his memories through stories that brought his loved ones closer to him. His kindness and joyful spirit touched everyone who knew him, and he brought a smile to everyone he ever met.
Though his journey among us has ended, the enduring spirit of Jose will remain engraved in the hearts of all who loved him. His legacy of joy, kindness, and generosity lives on, inspiring and uplifting all who carry his memory. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, they are equally full of gratitude for having known such a remarkable man.
