Oak Lawn

JoAnn Rose Scalise February 3, 1936 – September 20, 2025JoAnn Rose Scalise, 89, of Oak Lawn, Illinois, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home. Born on February 3rd, 1936, on the South Side of Chicago, to her late parents Joe and Anne. JoAnn remained deeply connected to her roots throughout her life. She later moved to California with her husband, where they lived for 15 years before returning to the South Side—where she remained until her passing.Proud of her Greek heritage, JoAnn was raised by her Greek grandmother and was fluent in what she affectionately called “hillbilly Greek.” A devoted member of the Greek Orthodox Church, her culture and faith remained central throughout her life.JoAnn worked as a telephone operator and was known for her love of talking on the phone—right up to the week before she passed. Her joyful conversations were often accompanied by her favorite pastimes: crocheting blankets and scarves for family and friends, and tending to her garden, where she especially enjoyed eating the fruits of her labor like lettuce and tomatoes.A lifelong animal lover, JoAnn always had chihuahuas and even bred them. Her beloved dog, Precious, will be present at her funeral in accordance with JoAnn’s wishes. She had a creative spirit—crafting beautiful hand-poured ceramics in her younger years—and a generous, caring nature. JoAnn was a natural caregiver who never hesitated to help someone in need—whether through a listening ear, thoughtful advice, research, or financial support. She consistently gave of herself and her resources, rarely spending anything on herself.JoAnn enjoyed going to estate sales with her longtime partner and love of her life, Jerry. One of her favorite sayings was, “If it’s free, it’s for me.” She was a strong-willed, patient, loving, hardworking, and kind woman, and will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.JoAnn is now reunited with her son Raymond. She is also now with Jerry on what we imagine is an endless trip to Las Vegas. She is survived by her loving daughters Jane and Sharon, her cherished grandson Rehan, her brother Joel, her sister Renee, several cousins and her faithful dog Precious. All Services will be held at:Kosary Funeral Home 9837 South Kedzie Avenue Evergreen Park, IL 60805 Visitation: Sunday September 28th, 2025 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM Trisagion - Prayer Service 6:00 PM Funeral Service: Monday September 29th, 2025 10:00 AM Interment to follow in the Demopoulos Family plot at: Evergreen Cemetery 8700 South Kedzie Avenue Evergreen Park, IL 60805
