John Angelo Galea, aka Pops, Johnny, Uncle Fonz, Uncle Moustachio, and Grandpa Too...
Went home to God on Saturday December 26th 2020.
Proudly born in Zejtun, Malta, to late Joseph Galea and late Grace (Borg) Galea.
John grew up in Brooklyn, New York... with, and survived by, his four very close siblings. Horace(Beatrice)Galea, Victor(Laura)Galea, Cathie(lateTony)Gurrera, and Michael (Marianne)Galea.
Survived also by his loving daughter Jonneal Galea, her partner, Michael Flores, also her mom, Jeanette Maly.
John honorably served his country as a US Marine from 1968-1972. His heart was in both New York and Chicago where he had so much love from family... and was well known for his outstanding restaurants, partnered with brother Michael, The Munch Bucket, in Chicago, and the famous Christina’s Corner Caffé, in NYC with unparalleled pizzas and distinct desserts!!

His humor and love filled the room, and will be missed intensely by his nieces and nephews, Anthony(Michelle)Gurrera-godson, Joseph(Judy)Gurrera, Robert(Erin)Gurrera, Lisa(Bobby)Catalano, Monique(Charlie)Puglisi, Tracey(Chris)Wahlers, Joseph(Denise)Galea, Christine(Frank)Capone, Michele(Jack)Bertelle, Rose(Brian)Healey, Charles Galea, Michael(Jennifer)Galea, Christine(Joe)Levinskas, Colleen(late Roberto) Diaz, Michael(Donna)Bucher, Kelly(Dave)Eggert, Joey(Amy)Garcia, Donnie(JoAnn)Arquette,
and also cousins Joe(Victoria)Mifsud, Anne Mifsud, Connie Mifsud, Mary(Mark)Piacenti, and kids, Francesca, Mariella, Josephine, Christopher, Giovanna, and Jerry, Michael, James, Robert, Anthony and Frankie Borg and the entire Borg family.

John’s larger then life personality was always the life of the party ... but he had a special love bond (and usually a nickname for), each and every one of his great nieces and nephews: Nicholas, Rocco, Jessica, Kayleigh, Kiera, Brooke, Ashley, Tyler, Charlie P, Danielle, Kyle, Cole, Carson, Carter, Austin, Drew, Devin, Julia, Olivia-Laura, Francesco, Victoria, Victor, Charlie B, Grace, Michael, Gianna, Janis, Lil Joey, littlest Joey, Jennifer, late Jesse, Olivia-Grace, Mallory, and Gabe.
He was loved as “Pops” by Pamela Hamilton, Anna-Banana Flores and “Grandpa Too” to Sofia Gomez
And absolutely adored by his dog Curly.

We all miss the good times with him and will forever carry him in our hearts.

“Goin’ home goin’ home
By the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul
Goin’ to plant a weeping willow
On the bank’s green edge it will
Grow grow grow
Sing a lullaby beside the water
Lovers come and go the river
Roll roll roll
Fare you well
Fare you well
I love you more then words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul”

My dearest Jonneal,

I can only recall meeting your Dad a few times but he was always a lovely, jovial person! Keep his memories, laughter, and love in your spirit as homage to the legacy he left you. Huge hugs and loving, healing energy are sent to you from the girls and I. I wish him well on his journey towards the ancestors, & am certain that he will be welcomed with open arms. All my love,

Vera AKA Dee 🥰

I have fond memories of working with my cousin John Galea. We worked at John’s Pizzeria on Bleecker Street together, and then again at Christina’s Corner Cafe. I had a lot of firsts with John; first visit to the race track; first Jazz bar (Arthur’s Tavern on Grove Street). He taught me a lot about hospitality. All around fun guy! He is deeply loved and missed. Condolences to Jonneal and all the family.
